ONE of the most difficult things to achieve in dressing is
getting that precious, perfectly polished look. Many spend fortune and loads of
time for this purpose, but eventually don't achieve that. However, the
attention Vicky Ify Njoku command on red carpets is worth every penny and
second of it. Vicky is not only the head honcho of VickyHeldan Clothing, a
label she established recently as a result of her love, passion and creative
saavy, this pretty designer has been applauded for her red carpet looks.
Get her secrets...
Know fashion
Fashion is about clothes and their relationship to the
moment, especially the time they’re being presented. Style is about you and
your relationship to yourself.
Vicky defines fashion as “any current trend or style in a
look or dressing. In other words, it can come in any form depending on how you
want to look and how well you want to maintain that particular look. Most
importantly, it is about being comfortable in expressing your personality
through whatever you put on.”
Style is eternal
This pretty designer believes that style is eternal; you
can’t agree more. After all, the great Yves Saint Laurent is quoted as saying,
“Fashions fade, and style is eternal.”
Cultivating your personal style is something that is
acquired over time. It is something that has to be nurtured and true style is
in the wearer. It is an individually distinctive way of putting ourselves
together. Vicky adds, “it is a simple way of self expression.”
Express yourself
There’s dressing indifferently because you don’t care, and
dressing indifferently to express yourself. If you care at all about your place
in society as a whole, then it’s important to understand the difference.
Just like the fashionista, expressing yourself with your
style reflects your own unique complexity as a human being. People want to be
'themselves' and be seen as themselves.
Invest in good quality shoes
Shoes are the biggest fashion fetish of many women. Just
like most ladies and celebs, Vicky loves shoes. She considers it as her
favourite fashion piece.
She says, “I love shoes because they give a lady-like look
and a nice poise.” Just like Vicky, buy at least the absolutely necessary
shoes--- a pair of classic black shoes, sandals, flat shoes, and sport shoes.
Continue your 'shoe collection' with a few pairs in
different colours, especially metallic.
Look for classic shapes. As for details, search for lace,
crystals or buckles; they're timeless and add a bit of uniqueness to the shoe.
Make sure you buy quality shoes, even if they're a bit more expensive. Finer
quality lasts longer and, therefore, you won't have to buy another pair of
shoes next month because the old one is already damaged.
The heels must also be as high as you are comfortable with.
It’s natural, it’s brown
Brown is a natural, down-to-earth neutral colour. It is
found in earth, wood and stone.
Brown is a warm colour that can stimulate the appetite. It
is found extensively in nature in both living and non-living materials.
The colour represents wholesomeness and earthiness. It also
represents steadfastness, simplicity, friendliness, dependability, and health.
Now you know why, Vicky’s favourite is definitely brown.
Put on some jewels
Jewellery gives a sparkly touch to everything you wear. The
designer says, “I love jewelries because they complement your dressing.”
For jewellery, rock it like Vicky. Here are some tips:
During daytime, it must be something that doesn't attract
too much attention, but completes your outfit — for example, a necklace with a
little gem as a pandantive, or a small bracelet.
For the evening, feel free to put on diamonds, pearls or
precious gems and metals. Not too much though.
And if you choose one type of jewelry — for instance, a
pearl necklace — don't wear another type on the same outfit.
For the pearl necklace, you will have to choose pearl
earrings while a diamond necklace will require diamond earrings. It goes for a
golden necklace — no silver bracelets, only gold.
Love your design
Of course, Vicky is a fashion designer, and her designs are
her favourites. She says, “my favourite fashion designer is VickyHeldan and
that happens to be me. I love VickyHeldan because it gives me a good
insight of what I want to look like and it totally defines my sense of style
when it comes to clothing.”
Put on some perfume
Perfume is, perhaps, the most personal type of cosmetic,
because it says a lot about your personality.
Vicky loves scents a lot but she doesn’t have a signature
scent; she has a great love for a lot of scents. "I am still trying so
hard to figure it out.”
Get your fashion muse
“My mum is my fashion muse. She is one fashionable person I
always want to have around me," she says.
Shop anywhere
The key to having a fabulous wardrobe is, knowing how to
shop, especially, if you’re one of those women who view shopping more as a
hobby than as a process. You have to master the process in order to make the
right fashion decisions.
First you do, when you enter the store is to 'scan' the
general outlook of the clothes and find out what type of store it is — the
range of prices, the age of the targeted consumer and the style of wares being
sold.
Your first concern should be the quality of the clothes; if
it’s not high enough, regardless of the design of the clothes, leave the place
without second thoughts.
For Vicky, she doesn’t have a favourite shopping spot. She
discloses, “I shop anywhere as far as that particular shop has whatever I
like.”
