Police arraign artiste for alleged theft


The police on Monday arraigned a 28-year-old man, who claimed to be an up-coming artiste, before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing seven mobile phone handsets and  N120,000 cash.
The accused, Godwin Onome, of no fixed address, is facing a charge of stealing before Magistrate Titus Abolariwa.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Agala Ebi, told the court that Onome stole five mobile phones belonging to Mr. Abass Olatunji, one belonging to Mr. Adewale Adenuga and another belonging to Miss Chika Ojimadu.
Ojimadu also allegedly lost N120,000 to the suspect.
He said that Onome was arrested on March 2 at about 1 a.m, at No 16, Albert St., Palmgrove, Lagos, where he went to steal one of the phones and cash belonging to Ojimadu.
“The defendant jumped the fence and entered the house to steal the cell phone and cash.
“Onome did not steal the mobile phones in the same house, he was moving from house to house to carry out his criminal act before he was caught.
“The defendant was about to steal Ojimadu’s phone, when God disfavoured him as she was not sleeping. Ojimadu raised an alarm while Onome could not jump the fence, and he was caught,” he said.
He said the offences contravened Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.
The magistrate granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000,with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case till April 18 for trial.
